There’s something so exciting about flipping the calendar to a brand-new year, isn’t there?

It’s like a fresh notebook waiting for the first words to be written. The idea of new opportunities, fresh starts, and the hope of a better year ahead fills us with anticipation.

But before we dive into our long lists of goals, have you ever stopped to think about how God fits into those plans? Proverbs 16:3 reminds us: “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be establishe.d” (NKJV)

What if, this year, we focused less on what we want to accomplish and more on what God is calling us to do?

Let’s talk about how to create resolutions that are rooted in faith.

Seek God First

Here’s the thing: before we map out our goals or fill up our planners, we need to pause and seek God’s guidance. Prayer and time in the Word are like the foundation of a house—it’s what keeps everything standing strong.

Have you prayed over your resolutions yet? If not, here’s a simple idea: take a quiet moment, grab a cup of coffee, and ask God,

“Lord, what would You have me focus on this year?”

You’d be amazed by how much clarity He can bring to our muddled thoughts when we stop trying to figure it all out on our own.

Let’s not forget the command of Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do.” That’s not just a suggestion; it’s an invitation to trust Him completely.

Prioritize Spiritual Growth

When we think about resolutions, our minds often jump to things like fitness goals, saving money, or learning a new skill. And while those are great, what if we made room for faith-centered goals this year?

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Daily Devotions: Even five minutes a day can make a huge difference. Find a quiet corner, open your Bible, and let God speak to your heart.

  • Join a Bible Study: Whether it’s with friends, at church, or even online, studying God’s Word with others can deepen your understanding and accountability.

  • Mentor or Be Mentored: There’s so much wisdom to be shared, whether you’re pouring into someone younger or learning from someone further along in their faith journey.

These goals aren’t about checking boxes—they’re about growing closer to the One who knows us best.

Focus on Eternal Goals

Here’s a truth that’s easy to forget. Some of our goals ohave a limited temporal value, but others have eternal significance. It’s tempting to focus on resolutions like losing 10 pounds or organizing your entire house (and don’t get me wrong, those have value!). But as Matthew 6:33 reminds us,But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Our focus is to be on the eternal things that have lasting value.

Eternal goals shift our perspective. Instead of asking, “What can I achieve this year?” we start asking, “How can I glorify God this year?” Maybe that looks like spending more time serving in your church, reaching out to a neighbor, or using your gifts to bless others.

Practical Steps to Let God Guide Your Year

Let’s wrap this up with some practical, actionable steps to start the year with God:

  1. Pray Over Your Resolutions: Invite God into the process from the start. Ask Him to show you what goals align with His purpose for your life.

  2. Write Them Down: Journaling is a powerful way to stay focused and see how God works through your goals. A simple Faith-Focused Goal Planner can help you track your spiritual growth, answered prayers, and priorities.

  3. Be Flexible: Sometimes, God’s plans take us in unexpected directions. Stay open to where He leads, even if it looks different from what you envisioned.

As you step into this new year, remember that you don’t have to do it alone. God is with you, guiding your steps and holding your future in His hands. Let this be the year where your resolutions aren’t just about what you can do, but about what God can do in and through you.

Here’s to a year rooted in faith, filled with His peace, and overflowing with His blessings.

You’ve got this—because He’s got you.

Be like Jesus every day!
