Have you ever said, "I really wanted to go to work today, but I just couldn't find the time"? Or, "I wanted to eat, but my schedule just didn’t allow it"? Of course not! Why? Because work and food are essential.
Now, let’s be honest—if time with God is truly important to us, shouldn’t it have the same priority? If you've ever struggled with consistency in your devotional time, you’re not alone. Today, I’ll walk you through four foolproof steps to help you schedule and stick to time with God. No more excuses—let’s make it happen!
Step 1: Time for a Self-Check
Before we set a plan, let’s take an honest look at where we stand. A sustainable and meaningful devotional time requires three things: a set schedule, consistency, and satisfaction.
Scheduled: Do You Have a Devotional Time?
Problem: "I don’t have one."
Solution: Set a time! If it’s not scheduled, it won’t happen.
Problem: "I have one, but I often miss it."
Solution: Adjust your schedule. If what you’re doing isn’t working, find a new time slot that does.
Consistent: Are You Showing Up?
Problem: "I’m pretty consistent… most of the time."
Reality Check: You either are or you aren’t.
Solution: Be honest with yourself. Find a time that you can truly commit to daily.
Satisfied: How Would You Rate Your Time with God?
On a scale from 1-5, how satisfied are you with your devotional time?
Problem: "I’m not satisfied—it’s rushed, inconsistent, or nonexistent."
Solution: You need a new plan!
Self-check complete! If your devotional time isn’t working, let’s fix it now and get back on track.
Step 2: Choose a Start Time
Are you a Rooster or an Owl? Understanding your natural rhythm can help you set yourself up for success.
Rooster vs. Owl: When Do You Function Best?
Rooster: Morning person? Schedule your quiet time early, when your mind is fresh and alert.
Owl: Night owl? Plan your devotional time in the evening as a way to wind down and reflect.
Not sure? Try both! Test waking up 30 minutes earlier or setting aside time before bed to see which works best.
⚠ Warning: Doing your quiet time in bed is a surefire way to fall asleep before you even begin!
Make God a Priority
Think about it:
"I really tried to go to work today, but…" Nope, you made it happen.
"I wanted to eat today, but…" Of course, you ate!
If meeting with God is truly important, make it non-negotiable—not just a "maybe if I have time."
Beat the Clock!
Problem: No set time = No devotion time.
Solution: Set a deadline. For example, "I will have my time with God before midnight, no exceptions!"
Step 3: Schedule It Like It Matters
Now that you've chosen your time, let's take it from a wish to a commitment by using these powerful tools:
1. The 4-Alarm Charm
Use technology to your advantage!
Set multiple alarms to wake up on time or remind you throughout the day.
Example: On Sundays, I set four alarms to ensure I’m up, dressed, fed, and ready to receive from God!
2. Planner Power
Write it down! If it’s in your top three daily priorities, it should be in your planner.
No planner? Create a to-do list and put it somewhere visible.
3. Mirror Magic
Where do you go first in the morning?
Fridge? Closet? Coffee pot? Leave a sticky note or reminder right there!
Meet yourself where you already go and remind yourself: Time with God comes first.
Step 4: Start NOW (Not Tomorrow!)
New habits require sustainability, a system, and a willingness to reboot when needed.
1. Make It Sustainable
If it’s not realistic, you won’t stick to it.
Start small and build up—you’re in this for the long haul!
2. Have a System
Be methodical in developing this discipline.
Make God a priority every single day.
3. Don’t Give Up!
Let’s be real—nobody’s perfect. At some point, you will miss a day.
Solution? Press that reset button, realign your goals, and restart the process.
